Maldives Plans Social Media Age Limits for Minors

(MENAFN) The Maldives is preparing to introduce restrictions on social media use for children under the age of 16, becoming the latest nation to adopt measures aimed at reducing young people's exposure to online risks.

According to reports, President Mohamed Muizzu announced the initiative during a press conference dedicated to child protection policies. The government intends to implement the new framework over the next year, with regulations designed to limit access to selected social media platforms for users below the age threshold.

Officials said the move is being driven by growing concerns about the impact of digital platforms on children, including exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying, and various forms of online abuse.

Muizzu emphasized that the proposed measures are intended to strengthen child safety rather than slow the country's broader technological development. He noted that the government remains committed to advancing digital transformation while introducing safeguards for younger users.

The Maldives joins a growing international trend toward age-based controls on social media access.

Australia became the first country to enact nationwide legislation preventing children under 16 from accessing social media platforms in December 2025. Similar measures were later adopted by Indonesia in March, making it the first Southeast Asian nation to implement such restrictions.

Malaysia has also moved in the same direction, introducing regulations this week aimed at preventing individuals under 16 from creating social media accounts.

Meanwhile, several European countries are exploring comparable policies. According to reports, governments in Poland, Denmark, France, Spain, Greece, and the United Kingdom are either considering or developing measures that would place greater limits on social media use by minors.

The planned Maldivian regulations are expected to be finalized and fully enforced within the coming year as authorities work to balance digital innovation with child protection objectives.
